The research assistant will be responsible for producing protein samples structural studies, especially NMR spectroscopy. Experience in molecular biology/cloning, E. coli expression and protein purification and/or cell culture experience preferred, but not necessarily required. This position will work closely with both the PI and all other laboratory members and thus the applicant must be able to work both independently and as a team. They must also be able to initiate and follow-through on projects, troubleshoot technical problems independently be highly motivated and willing to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
Molecular biology/cloning, protein expression (E.coli), protein purification for NMR experiments?Prepare DNA primers, preparation of samples for DNA sequencing, DNA purification, PCR gene amplification, restriction enzyme cleavage, ligation, E. Coli transformation, E. Coli shaker flask and fermentor expression, protein purification from E. coli cells using HPLC (affinity chromatography, gel filtration, among others), protein gel electrophoresis, Western blots, protein characterization using dynamic light scattering. Production of proteins from eukaryotic cell culture.
Daily laboratory maintenance and operation?Inventory and procurement of supplies and equipment, maintenance of general lab equipment such as the water purification system, centrifuges, fermentation devices, chromatography systems, organization and monitoring of lab chemicals (including keeping track of expiration dates, monitoring our compliance with the hazardous waste policies, and delivering chemical hazardous waste to the disposal center), organization of molecular biology freezers and refrigerator.
Training of visiting researchers in use of equipment in the laboratory.?When needed, teach experimental techniques visiting laboratory staff.
Qualifications:
Associates/B.S. degree in a relevant field
Research laboratory experience preferred but not required
Ability to initiate and follow-through on projects; troubleshoot technical problems independently
Excellent communication skills, ability to work well in a laboratory environment and exceptional organizational skills are required.
