Departmental Overview
The Department of Economics is one of the largest teaching and research departments within the College of Letters and Science, with over 1,000 undergraduate majors, 130 graduate students, and annual enrollments of more than 10,000 students. The Department has over 10 career staff and 36 regular faculty, with a total active academic membership of approximately 70, including joint appointments, lecturers, visiting faculty and active emeriti. The department also has a very large cadre of Graduate Student Instructors and Graduate Student Researchers number over a hundred throughout the academic year. Additionally the Department hosts 20-30 visiting scholars and near 100 visiting students throughout the academic year. Economics occupies some 20,000 assignable square feet, within Evans Hall, including several research centers, classrooms and computer labs, and several teaching offices, graduate student research offices, and dissertation labs. The Department has a $20 million annual budget comprised of state, endowment, special project, extramural, contracts/grants, prize and student aid monies, as well as donor funds.
Responsibilities
The Research Data Analyst duties involve gathering, analyzing, and interpreting a wide variety of research data, which may include selecting data samples, preparing questionnaires, and analyzing collected information according to established statistical methods. Prepares reports, charts, tables, and other visual aids.
Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. The goal of the data gathering and research is to produce papers on a variety of economics topics. Incumbent is expected to work with PI on a daily basis utilizing data sets and previous findings for empirical analysis.
Responsibilities include:
Assists with implementation of business processes. Maintains and develops research gathering, retrieval and reporting systems. Involves data construction, analysis and processing. Also involves running empirical analysis of economic data using statistical software and STATA.
Plans studies, including the design of survey instruments and determining the sampling and reporting procedures.Involves draft editing of Economics papers.
Collaborates on the design, documentation, testing and implementation of research studies.Literature review involving locating references, prior evidence and applicable methodologies.
Collects and generates original data sets for the purpose of complementing existing data sets and identify errors.Assists in developing systems for organizing data to analyze, identify and report trends.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
Working knowledge of research function.
Working skills in statistical analysis, system programming, database design and data security measures.
Working skills in analysis and consultation.
Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and written.
Background in Economics, Math and Statistics.
Programming skills in specific software: STATA.
Ability to organize and clean data sets.
Ability to complete work in a timely manner.
