　　With 8,000 faculty, more than 700 undergraduate programs and around 83,000 students on three campuses, the University of Toronto is in a class of its own. St. George, the leafy downtown campus, has the historic stone buildings, while the newer Scarborough and Mississauga campuses are in quieter suburban settings. U of T’s halls have echoed with the debates of several future premiers and prime ministers.

The university has cultivated more Rhodes Scholars and more Nobel laureates than any other school in Canada.

A location in the country’s energy capital has its perks (excellent job opportunities) and its problems (a shortage of apartments). “We’re achieving the high standards we’ve set before us, as we near the goal of becoming a top five research institute in the country,” says president Elizabeth Cannon.

　　Queen’s is a hub of academic research on the shores of Lake Ontario near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. The campus is dotted with charming limestone buildings in Romanesque revival and neo-Gothic style, several more than 100 years old.

　　Since opening its doors 50 years ago in Burnaby, Simon Fraser University has spread to the downtown core of Vancouver, as well as the fast-growing suburb of Surrey. All three campuses have developed strong ties with their local communities.

　　Built along the banks of the Thames River in the “forest city” of London, Ont., Western is one of the largest universities in the province. With more than 400 academic programs, 90 first-year courses and approximately 175 student clubs, it is more than just a regional powerhouse; increasingly, the school is building international recognition.
