　　1. 英属哥伦比亚大学

　　An undergraduate could feel overwhelmed at a school as big as UBC, with its sprawling Point Grey campus and an international reputation for research and graduate programs. It’s an ongoing challenge that the university is addressing with efforts to create a more intimate learning environment by adding more student-centric learning spaces and engaging neighbouring municipalities as community partners.

　　2. 麦吉尔大学

　　McGill attracts bright students from around the world. “A degree from McGill right now is worth a lot, because the reputation of McGill worldwide is strong,” says principal Suzanne Fortier. The university has cultivated more Rhodes Scholars and more Nobel laureates than any other school in Canada.

　　3. 滑铁卢大学

　　The University of Waterloo is a research mecca. There’s the Balsillie School of International Affairs, a collaboration with Wilfrid Laurier University, and the prestigious Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is nearby. The Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre opened in 2012, as did a campus in Stratford, Ont., dedicated to digital media and information technology.

　　With 8,000 faculty, more than 700 undergraduate programs and around 83,000 students on three campuses, the University of Toronto is in a class of its own. St. George, the leafy downtown campus, has the historic stone buildings, while the newer Scarborough and Mississauga campuses are in quieter suburban settings. U of T’s halls have echoed with the debates of several future premiers and prime ministers.

　　The research-intensive University of Alberta offers more than 200 undergraduate programs and 170 graduate programs. Located south of the Legislature Building at one end of Whyte Avenue, where Edmontonians shop and socialize, the main campus is a serene green space surrounded by newer steel-and-glass buildings devoted to engineering, science and medicine.

　　5. 戴尔豪斯大学

　　Dalhousie University dates back to 1818, when the ninth earl of Dalhousie, then the governor of Nova Scotia, used funds collected during the War of 1812 to open a college that could be attended by any person from any class. Today it is the largest university in Atlantic Canada.

　　7. 圭尔夫大学

　　The University of Guelph grew out of the Ontario Agriculture College (circa 1874) and the Ontario Veterinary College (built in 1880). Now Guelph is again embracing its expertise in food, the environment and communities.

　　In a province that has 41 per cent of Canada’s arable land, the University of Saskatchewan has traditionally been seen as a hotbed of agricultural research. But there’s much more on the go here.

　　Since opening its doors 50 years ago in Burnaby, Simon Fraser University has spread to the downtown core of Vancouver, as well as the fast-growing suburb of Surrey. All three campuses have developed strong ties with their local communities.

　　10. 皇后大学

　　Queen’s is a hub of academic research on the shores of Lake Ontario near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. The campus is dotted with charming limestone buildings in Romanesque revival and neo-Gothic style, several more than 100 years old.
